Presentation (English)

The Association was founded in 1954. It then was called "Verband Deutscher Riechstoff-Fabriken". In 1984 it changed its name into "Vereinigung Deutscher Riechstoff-Hersteller e. V. (VDRH)", and in 2003 into "Deutscher Verband der Riechstoff-Hersteller e. V. (DVRH)". At present, 27 companies are affiliated to the DVRH, the majority of which has its production site in Germany. With reference to Germany the organization degree is about 85 %.

With reference to Germany the members employ all in all about 2.500 persons with an annual turnover of about 500 million Euro.

The DVRH represents the interests of the fragrance manufacturers located in Germany. The association is also interested to serve foreign companies who active in the German market. Such companies can become supporting members. The typical tasks of the DVRH include care for its members and the representation of loftier in-terests vis-à-vis institutions and associations at the national and international level.

The association's legal seat is in Berlin. In mid-2002 the association opened a liaison office in Brussels to mark its permanent presence at the seat of the EU institutions. In the association's view European evolution is of increasing im-portance. The European market has virtually become a domestic market. The DVRH must take this evolution into account. Furthermore contacts especially with German EP Members and the EU Commission are to be cultivated. The association's presence in Brussels also promotes the collaboration with other associations there.

The DVRH's offices also represent the Deutscher Verband der Aromenindustrie (DVAI) . The offices have a staff of three. The DVRH's annual budget is exclusively financed through membership fees proportional to the members' financial potential.

The DVRH has set itself the following tasks:

  • Representation of the members' interests, especially vis-à-vis national and international institutions (German Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, German Ministry for Environment Protection, EU Commission, EP)
  • Service to its members
  • Public Relations.

The standard service includes:

  • General monthly information letters,
  • Internal circulars on important subjects,
  • Fragrance Flash, an abridged information letter in German and in English,
  • REACH EXPRESS and REACH aktuell.

In 2003 the Association will have its own website.

Members have the possibility to take an active part in the DVRH's activities in collaborating on the Fragrances Working Group which normally meets thrice a year.

The problem of allergies is a particular challenge for the fragrance industry. With regard to these health problems, in general no distinction is made between temporary intolerances and real allergies.

The most important customers of the fragrance industry are cosmetics producers and soap and detergent producers. One must not emphasize that the good collaboration with the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW) and its members is of imminent importance. The DVRH is a member of IFRA (International Fragrance Association). This association has close contacts with Cosmetics Europe - The Personal Care Association and the International Association of the Soap, Detergent and Maintenance Product Industries (AISE).

As a national association the DVRH complies with IFRA's Guidelines and Regulations, a worldwide autoregulation which all IFRA members and their associated fragrance producers observe. This is an important confidence factor for the customer.
